Experience from the 2023 Summer Exchange Program at the University of California, Berkeley:Xuanming Xing

Author: Time:2023-12-26

It is an honor to have the opportunity to visit the University of California, Berkeley for a three-weekexchange programthis summer. During this period, I have gaineda lot of insights.

The inclusivity of the Berkeley campus is breathtaking, as it is like a melting pot that brings people from different countries, races, and native languagestogether. The people who gather togethernot onlymaintain individual independence, such as different cultural customs and interests, whichmakesthe Berkeley campus diverse; butalso have group similarities, such as the excellent qualities of honesty, integrity, and respect for others intheBerkeley Honor Code, which makes the Berkeley campus harmonious.

Such a diverse and harmonious campus is full of humanistic care. Tramps are extremely common on the campus of Berkeley, and the schoolofficers don’texpel thembecause it may cause some trouble for campus management. Instead, theyareallowed to stay on campus, the schoolprovidesthem with a warm 'home'. For the disabled group, the Berkeley campus fully embodies humanistic care. In a class called Berkeley Experience, Teacher Elizabeth assigned us a task. She asked us to discover as many convenient facilities for disabled groups on campus as possible in groups within 15 minutes. In just 15 minutes, my group partners and I discovered 7 different related facilities. Some of these facilities are also commonly seen in China, such as accessiblerestrooms andslopes that facilitate wheelchair avoidance of steps. But more facilities are relatively rareto seein China, such as door opening buttons specifically designed for disabled people in front of teaching buildings, foldable pedals on buses for disabled people to get on and off, and areas specifically designed to secure wheelchairs. I think that behind each of these facilities lies the love and warmth of Berkeley campus culture, and what it brings to people is infinitelytouched.

Berkeley's classrooms place great emphasis on students' subjectivity and positive interaction between teachers and students. Group discussions, classresearch, and presentations are common in Berkeley's classrooms. Taking thecourse namedCalifornia CultureI chose as an example, Teacher Michael had us conduct 8 group discussions, 4 classsurveys, and 3 presentation presentations in 6timesclasses. This teaching model undoubtedly helps to stimulate our enthusiasm, initiative, and creativity in learning. In this teaching mode, students can truly experience the pleasure and sense of achievement of immersive learning, situational learning, and cooperative learning, makingprogress and improvement in a relatively relaxed and cheerful atmosphere.

We often say that to truly experience the culture and spirit of a school, one must go into the library of the school and take a look. There are a total of 38 libraries on the campus of Berkeley, and the number of paper books alone exceeds 10 million, not to mention the richer digital resources. For a Chinese student studying humanities, the East Asian Library on the Berkeley campus is definitely a must-have place to visit. After entering the East Asian Library, I was completely stunned. As far as the other side of thePacific Ocean, more than ten thousand kilometers away, I could see many Chinese classics, as well as various works and reference books by modern and contemporary Chinese scholars. What left a particularly deep impression on me was the discovery in the new book recommendation area of the East Asia Library of the recently published work "Research on the History of the Tang and Song Uyghurs" byFuxueYang, a renowned alumnus of the School of History and Culture of Lanzhou University and now the head of the Humanities Research Department of the Dunhuang Research Institute (Science Press, 2022).

During theexchange programperiod, all of my courses are scheduled from Monday to Thursday, which means that on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, while completing my homework after class, Icanhavediscretionary control ofmy timeand goonatrip. In the first two weeks of Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, I visitedmany famous attractions in the Bay Area, such asGolden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, Union Square, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,Stanford UniversityandYosemite National Park.

It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books. The experiences I saw and heard during the journey left a deep impression on me. I remember once when I was using Uber to take a taxi to thePalace of Fine Arts, I met a Chinese driver. When passing through the Bay Bridge, the driver told us that the bridge had been severely damaged due to a major earthquake. In order to properly complete the post-earthquake repair work of the bridge, the San Francisco city government consulted with Japanese engineers, American engineers, and Chinese engineers for suggestions. Japanese engineers have stated that the repair of this bridge is too difficult and they are powerless. Although American engineers have provided a repair plan, the cost of this plan is several times that of the plan provided by Chinese engineers. In the end, the San Francisco city government adopted the plan provided by Chinese engineers, which means that the bridge, which now flows continuously and effectively connects the two cities ofOaklandand San Francisco, was designed by the Chinese. In the process of discussing this matter, both of us are very proud of it.

The harmonious coexistence between humans and nature is something thatimpressed meduring my journey. Whether in San Francisco or Oakland, birds are always visible everywhere. Groups of birds either spread their wings in the sky, perch onwires,or freely play on the ground. Insomeattractionssuch asGolden GatePark and Yosemite National Park, I also saw many little squirrels gnawing on pinecones and deer freely shuttling through the trees and grass. They were not afraid of pedestrians passing by, andthe pedestrianswould not harm them.

The friendliness between peopleand peoplealso moved mea lot. Strangers greet each other and smile when passing by, say 'excuse me' when passing in front of others, andpeople will say'thank you' after the service personnel complete the service for them. These seemingly casual details will give warmth and strength to people.

Additionally, I would like to discuss the importance of learning English. English, as the most widely used language in the world today and the language with the highest number of second language learners, plays a very important role in communication among people from different countries, races, and native languages. The motto of CuiyingHonors Collegeis "I have the worldandthe world has me", which reflects the two-way interaction betweenthetop talents in basic disciplines and the world, and the bridge and link that this two-way interaction relies on is English. This inspires me to further strengthen my English learning and continuously improve my English proficiency in my future studies.

Finally, what I want to say is appreciation.I would like to express my gratitude to the leaders and teachers ofCuiying HonorsCollege for providing us with an opportunity to study at a world-renowneduniversity. And Iwould like to express my gratitude to the team leader and fellow students for their carefor me.I would also like to express my gratitude to the thoughtful guidance of all the teachers who taught me and theassistanceof my classmates from all over the world during my exchange program period.Thanksto everyone I have met!
