UCB Summer School Experience

I had the incredible opportunity to attend UC Berkeley's summer school this summer, and those three weeks were nothing short of transformative.Stepping onto the UC Berkeley campus for their summer school was like walking into a realm of endless possibilities. Two courses, Art & Design and American Humor, awaited me, promising an adventure that would forever alter my perspective. Little did I know that those three weeks would become a cherished chapter in the book of my life.

The moment I entered the American classroom, a wave of excitement and apprehension washed over me. Unlike the traditional lecture halls I was accustomed to back in China, this space buzzed with energy. The air was charged with curiosity, and students weren't just passive listeners; they were active participants, ready to share their thoughts, challenge conventions, and embark on intellectual journeys together. Professors encouraged students to voice their opinions, challenge ideas, and engage in lively debates. This fostered an environment where diverse perspectives were not only tolerated but celebrated. It was refreshing to see students confidently express their thoughts, often leading to insightful discussions that enriched the learning experience. The concept of interactive learning was an integral part of the courses. Group projects, interactive presentations, and collaborative assignments were the norm. This not only promoted teamwork and communication skills but also encouraged students to take ownership of their education. The approach was student-centered, and I felt a genuine sense of empowerment in my learning journey.

In the Art & Design course, professor was not distant figures but mentors who ignited flames of inspiration within us. He encouraged us to explore uncharted territories, experiment with various mediums, and fearlessly translate our thoughts onto canvas. The classroom became a sanctuary where imagination knew no bounds.

American Humor, on the other hand, was a delightful rollercoaster of laughter and introspection. The classroom was a symphony of chuckles and guffaws as we dissected the nuances of humor across cultures. The professor, a master storyteller, wielded words like an artist wielding a brush, painting vivid tales that left us in stitches. But beneath the humor lay a deeper exploration of societal quirks and human idiosyncrasies that left us pondering long after the laughter had subsided.

Berkeley's climate is perfect, basically around 15-25 degrees, but only in the morning and evening or cloudy days can be a little cold, so you can see the phenomenon of "sweatshirts and cotton jackets take off, shorts and jeans" on campus. Every day in Berkeley for three weeks was sunny without rain, but unlike Lanzhou, it was extremely dry.Leaving the classroom meant venturing into the heart of Californian life. The sunny days were filled with discoveries that tugged at my senses and emotions.

Venturing into the Berkeley backcountry, I found myself atop the majestic Big C, a vantage point that unveiled a breathtaking tapestry of wonders. As I gazed out, the entire expanse of Berkeley lay before me, a bustling city nestled under the embrace of cerulean skies. The Golden Gate Bridge stood as a sentinel in the distance, its regal presence a testament to human ingenuity. From this lofty perch, I felt a profound connection to the world below, as if I were suspended between earth and sky, a witness to the grandeur of nature and the aspirations of humanity. In that moment, time seemed to stand still, and the beauty that stretched out before me was etched into my soul, a reminder of the boundless horizons that await those willing to seek them.

Coming to San Francisco, I was spellbound by the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, standing tall against the backdrop of the cerulean sky. As I walked its span, a sense of awe enveloped me, symbolizing the bridge I had built between my academic pursuits and the reality that lay beyond.

Ucb students can boat for free at Berkeley Marina with their campus card.At the Berkeley marina, nestled beneath the wide expanse of the California sky, I found myself immersed in an enchanting experience that would forever etch its beauty in my memory. The call of the water was irresistible, a gentle invitation to embark upon a journey of serenity and liberation. As I stepped onto the boat, a sense of tranquility enveloped me. The shimmering waters stretched out before me, a vast canvas of cerulean blue, reflecting the boundless sky above. The boat itself seemed to be a vessel of dreams, patiently awaiting our voyage into the heart of the marina's embrace. With each stroke of the oar, the boat glided gracefully, carrying me away from the shore and into a world where time seemed to slow down. The rhythmic motion of the water beneath me lulled my senses into a state of calm, and I found myself immersed in a dialogue with nature. The gentle sway of the boat was like a soothing lullaby, and all the worries that had clung to me seemed to dissolve into the tranquil depths.

The Berkeley marina's gift of free boating was more than just a recreational activity; it was an invitation to connect with the essence of the natural world and find solace in its embrace. This experience, so comfortable and liberating, remains a cherished memory, a reminder of the harmonious dance between human spirit and the serene beauty of the waters that cradle us.

The friendliness and openness of the people I met were heartwarming. I struck up conversations with fellow students during breaks, in cafes, and even while waiting for public transportation. This casual social interaction was a refreshing departure from the reserved nature of similar situations back in China. I found myself making friends easily and forging connections that I will treasure for a long time.

Overall, the summer I spent at UC Berkeley was an unforgettable experience. It was a time that broadened my horizons, deepened my understanding of American culture, and left behind valuable memories and friendships. The vibrant atmosphere of the American classroom, the friendly locals, and the diversity of customs intertwined to create a unique and unforgettable adventure that will forever leave a deep imprint on my heart.

As those three weeks drew to a close, I was a tapestry woven with threads of newfound knowledge, unforgettable experiences, and heartfelt connections. UC Berkeley's summer school had etched its mark on my soul, shaping not just my intellect but also my emotions. I returned home, carrying with me the colors of California, the echoes of laughter, and a heart brimming with gratitude for the transformative journey that had unfolded under the Californian sun.
