Planting seeds in April, anticipating a harvest in September—Cuiying Honors College organizes labor practice education for students

Author: Time:2024-04-12

After Qingming Festival, with the onset of spring and the land revitalized by recent rains, the environment is bursting with life. On the afternoon of April 11th, students gathered at the "Cuiying Seedling Nursery," a labor practice education base, for their first collective labor experience.

Before the start of the labor class, Lyu Jie, the Deputy Secretary of the College Party Committee, outlined the expectations for the labor education class and the daily management of the "Cuiying Seedling Nursery." She emphasized that labor education is a crucial part of the comprehensive educational approach, advocating that everyone should respect and love labor. She expressed her hope that through practical experience, students would acquire basic labor skills, develop a sense of responsibility and teamwork, and most importantly, establish a correct view of the value of labor.

Following the preparatory remarks, a teacher from the school's Logistics Support Department taught and demonstrated the students how to properly ridge the soil, apply mulch, and sow seeds. Eager to put their lessons into practice, the students then grabbed their agricultural tools and enthusiastically plunged into the vigorous labor.

The teacher, wielding a shovel, demonstrated the technique for creating ridges—pushing forward with strength and precision in each movement. The students watched attentively, taking note of every detail, before trying their hands at it. Some energetically dug into the soil with shovels, while others used rakes and spades to help smooth and arrange the soil. The scene was lively yet orderly. In no time, neatly aligned rows of vegetable ridges were skillfully “sculpted” by the students.

Next, the teacher demonstrated the method of mulching, and the students gathered around to learn. Holding a roll of plastic film, the teacher started from one side, slightly pressing it down with a foot, then continued unrolling it forward. The students watched intently and began to try it themselves. Some pulled the film tight while others helped secure it, working together in coordinated teamwork.

After careful mulching, the seeding process began. The teacher first demonstrated how to maintain proper spacing and depth, evenly scattering the seeds across the soil. The students took up spades and marked crosses on the film-covered soil, distributing the seeds evenly at the intersections of the crosses while maintaining appropriate spacing and depth. After sowing, they gently covered the seeds with soil using their spades, ensuring that the seeds were well-integrated with the earth. Their movements were gentle and meticulous, as if they were quietly paving the way for the seeds to sprout and come to life.

Under the warm spring sun, the students earnestly learned and practiced, and the college teachers joined in the labor as well, making the two hours of work pass quickly. Through the planting activity, the students not only enriched their life experiences and practical skills but also deepened their understanding and respect for labor, fostering a sense of responsibility and patience.

Today, we planted tomatoes, potatoes, and leeks, and also sowed flowers. Moving forward, the students will continue to plant other crops under the guidance of the labor education’s teachers and care for them as they grow robustly. Let us look forward to a bountiful season where, nurtured by the students' efforts, the "Cuiying Seedling Nursery" will bear plentiful fruits and bloom vibrantly.
